About the Thumb

Idle Thumbs is a games magazine brought to you by a gathering of QA managers, journalists, students, game porters, community managers and miscellaneous game industry gnomes, spread accross the UK and North America. (There's also a Dutchman.)

Although many of us have a professional background in games, when it comes to Thumbs, we're really just fans. Fans with dashes of journalism and industry experience, yes, but still fans. We come home from our jobs, and our classes, we play games, and we write about it.

That means we don't have the time nor the intention to cover everything. There are hundreds of games that come out each year, most of which are good for one thing: ignoring. If you are looking for sites that are updated continuously with coverage of all the latest releases, we suggest you stick with GameSpy or GameSpot. These publications are excellent in what they do, though it is not our aim to be like them. We don't even have any paid staff, or an office.

Idle Thumbs exists to explore our personal interests in games, to highlight things we deem worthy, and to connect with the people who are making games that cause us to smile and nod approvingly. That doesn't mean our coverage is entirely arbitrary. Actually, we are very passionate about quality games writing. If something doesn't really work, or doesn't go that extra mile, we don't publish it.

Essentially, we do this because we like it. We're not cynical burnt-out industry veterans, or self righteous Japanese import snobs who want to show off how hardcore they are. We don't believe replacing perfectly fine English words with French italicized ones is indicative of a higher intelligence. We're also not "like The Onion, but for games". Please. Our articles are real. Except for the one about a two thousand ton radioactive mecha-goose leaving a bloody trail of destruction through LA. No one is really sure what the hell that was.

Want to apply for our all-singing, all-dancing writing troupe? Or do you have a question about this site and you're sure it's not a stupid one? Target us with your telepathy, or if you're in a hurry, use this internet-enhanced contact form.

It is not as bad as it seems, because the voltage is quite low.
